February 27, 2019 (AUSTIN, TX) Netgate®, the leading provider of open-source security solutions, today announced the launch of TNSR Business targeted at users who have secure networking products with up to 10 Gbps network interface cards (NICs) - making high-powered and orchestration-managed secure networking solutions affordable for any business.

The fast and secure movement of digital information is the lifeblood of every modern organization. That requires super fast, easy to manage, services-flexible routers, firewalls, VPNs and more. But historically, speed and flexibility have only been available at a hefty price - and with vendor lock-in. To survive and thrive, organizations must slash secure networking costs, ratchet up networking speed, and be able to rapidly respond to changing business needs. Open-source secure networking is the lynchpin. Through TNSR, Netgate provides open-source secure networking software solutions at a fraction of the price of legacy brands.

TNSR Business is aimed at power users, SMB and Enterprises who need up to 10 Gbps of throughput at given network location - available as a $399 annual subscription per instance, including Business Technical Assistance from Netgate Global Support. Just as with TNSR Enterprise, it is underpinned by FD.io’s Vector Packet Processing (VPP), which provides 1-2 orders of magnitude packet processing improvement over traditional kernel-based approaches.

“For years now, Netgate has been getting requests for a product like pfSense® software that has higher packet processing performance, and can be managed by modern IT automation platforms like Puppet, Chef®, Ansible®, or Saltstack®,” said Jamie Thompson, Netgate CEO. “TNSR is that product - and TNSR Business makes it available for a little more than a dollar a day. Businesses with bandwidth-hungry, latency-sensitive, or significant amounts of security-encrypted traffic will be hard pressed to beat TNSR Business on a price-performance or total cost of ownership basis.”

“As with all technology, there comes a time when limits are reached and a fundamentally new approach is required,” said Jim Thompson, Netgate CTO. “At Netgate, we knew as early as 2014, that pfSense software could not continue to evolve to meet the increasing call for router, firewall, and VPN performance demands. Faster, cheaper processors and NICs were increasingly underutilized. The cry for multi-instance management - in step with IT automation via APIs, enabling an array of instances to simultaneously adapt to changing security or networking policies - would not abate. The rise of virtual network functions (VNF) and cloud native functions (CNF) built on microservices and containers would bring new challenges and workloads. But, there was a bright spot on the horizon. It was clear a new day would dawn where open-source secure networking software and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) silicon could, together, shatter previous price-performance curves. TNSR Business provides orders of magnitude greater packet processing performance at a fraction of the cost of legacy solutions.”

The software product is available for deployment on Netgate’s SG-5100, XG-1537, XG-1541 appliances, as well as a bare metal image for non-Netgate appliances and virtual machines, and from AWS Marketplace and Microsoft Azure Cloud Service Providers.

A free 120-day trial version of the software will also be made available here.
