Netgate® Advances TNSR™ Open Source Secure Networking with Release 19.02
March 18, 2019
Adds Business, Enterprise and Service Provider Infrastructure Features
March 18, 2019 (AUSTIN, TX) – Netgate, the leading provider of open-source secure networking solutions, today announced its latest release of TNSR software, 19.02. This release updates TNSR’s open source infrastructure across the board, and adds important new features required to solve service provider IP address space challenges, business aggregated throughput needs, and cloud service provider deployment expansion.
Release 19.02 advances the following capabilities:
- Updates TNSR with the latest versions of Vector Packet Processing (VPP), Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), Free Range Routing (FRR), CentOS, and Kea DHCP. Open source project progression is continuous. While a growing number of businesses are adopting open source for its fast evolution, vendor freedom, and compelling economics - they remain reluctant to entrust vital secure networking infrastructure to mere ‘projects’. TNSR removes the concern by integrating powerful open source project code bases into a product - complete with rigorous debugging, testing, packaging, and support.
- Enables TNSR to be deployed on Microsoft Azure. Now businesses with Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) instances within Microsoft Azure, or across Azure and AWS Marketplace clouds, can protect applications with high-speed firewalls, deploy large-scale ACL deployments, or interlink them with high-speed point-to-point or point-to-multipoint IPSec connections.
- Adds Mapping of Address and Port (MAP), specifically MAP Translation (MAP-T) and MAP Encapsulation (MAP-E). Service providers across the world are rapidly running out of IPv4 address space. Now they can fully exploit their internal IPv6 networks - while enabling end customers to operate on their more familiar IPv4 addresses - without the huge overhead, statefulness problems, and requirement for ‘port routing’ within the carrier network that comes with Carrier-Grade NAT solutions.
- Adds support for Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP). LACP provides a standard method for bonding multiple physical ports into a single logical channel. The primary benefits of LACP (often referred to as Link Aggregation Group, or LAG) are increased capacity - where traffic can be balanced across links to provide greater aggregated throughput; and redundancy - where a link group can survive the loss of one or more physical links. These use cases are commonly seen across Enterprise, Data Center, and Service Provider networks - whether on-premises or cloud-based.
“The fact that business, enterprise, and service provider customers are pushing us to add capabilities that facilitate commercial deployment and infrastructure scale is exciting,” said Jim Thompson, Netgate CTO. “It shows the market at large is thinking of TNSR as a solution for secure networking problems that extend well beyond our original focus of high-performance open source firewalls, VPNs, and routers.”
TNSR is available for deployment on Netgate’s SG-5100, XG-1537, XG-1541 appliances, as a bare metal image for non-Netgate appliances and virtual machines, and from AWS Marketplace and Microsoft Azure Cloud Service Providers.
