Today, Netgate® announces the availability of TNSR® Release 20.02, our ninth consecutive release of TNSR since its inception in May 2018. This release updates and enhances many Release 19.12 features (just out in December) so we decided to push these updates out quickly. Here are the highlights:

Underlying architecture updates

MAP-T

The TNSR Mapping of Address and Port using Translation (MAP-T) Border Router (BR) implementation improves compliance with RFC 7599, and provides the following features:

  • Retains the ability for IPv4 end hosts to communicate across an IPv6 domain with other IPv4 hosts
  • Permits both individual IPv4 address assignment and IPv4 address sharing with a predefined port range
  • Allows communication between IPv4-only and IPv6-enabled hosts and native IPv6-only servers in domains that use IPv4-translatable IPv6 addresses
  • Allows the use of IPv6 native network operations, including the ability to classify IP traffic and perform IP traffic routing optimization for IPv4 destinations outside the MAP domain

Shallow Virtual Assembly (SVA)

The addition of Shallow Virtual Assembly (SVA) to TNSR provides a more efficient method of processing fragmented IPv4 traffic by retaining Layer 3 and Layer 4 information so that any following fragments can have operations applied using the Layer 3 and 4 data from the initial fragment. When compared to full reassembly, SVA decrease buffers required for a given network load, while also decreasing latency across a network path. Additional details on how SVA works and how to implement it in TNSR can be found here.

Full release detail can be found in 20.02 release notes, with deeper coverage in TNSR documentation.
